Summary

Computed Tomography (CT) is the workhorse of modern medical imaging, accounting for approximately 65 million adult scans in the United States each year.1 An exciting development that offers great promise to further increase the modality’s potential is Dual Energy CT (DECT).

In this first in a series of three Expert Forum Webcasts on Dual Energy CT in Clinical Routine, Shuai Leng, PhD, an Associate Professor and board-certified Medical Physicist in the Department of Radiology at the Mayo Clinic will present the technical principles of Dual Energy CT and its benefits in clinical practice.

Different approaches to achieve Dual Energy CT and different terminologies that have been used in Dual Energy and multi-energy CT will be reviewed. Key elements in Dual Energy CT and their influence on image quality and radiation dose will be discussed. Methods to optimize scanning, reconstruction and post processing techniques according to imaging task and patient habitus will also be presented.
